Why is Lagaan a Landmark Movie?

Indeed Lagaan picks up the thread from the inimitable master Satyajit Ray himself as regards the use of games as a metaphor for cross-cultural power negotiations. If in Shatranj Ke Khiladi, it is the British who change the rules of the Indian game, in Lagaan it is the Indians who learn to beat the British at their own game... Expand

Lagaan was a reasonably good film no doubt-but by no means a great film. And as for the hyperbolic praise being showered on it, if it is not patriotic bias,it is simply poor judgement. In any case DCH and Monsoon Wedding were far better films of last year...

To Tilo Please see Ray's film again! Then consult Vinay Lal's insightful article on the film in Manushi (No 92-92), if you have time. Geetha Ganapathy-Doré

the use of games as a metaphor for cross-cultural power negotiations. If in Shatranj Ke Khiladi, it is the British who change the rules of the Indian game............... The British conquest was merely in the background in SKK. where was the cross cultural encounter????? what is this nonsense about both cultures getting "contaminated" by the encounter? Your analysis throws no new light on anything. I found this simpler and direct. That is all Lagaan is - an Asterix comic brought to life http://www.outlookindia.com/full.asp?sid=2&fodname=20010706&fname=lagaan

Thanks for reading the article. I did mean it to be a hype but rather a remedy to it. I shall certainly see the film you recommend. Geetha Ganapathy-Doré

LAGAN is just another absurd movie like so many others. Its total crap. There is nothing special about the movie apart from some fancy location, and smart marketing and a school boyish essay praising the film written by Amitabh bachan in TOI. AB anyway is in deep shit and praises anything now-a-days to stay in the limelight and clear his debts

Nice. You must be having such "grand" opinions on movies like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Thanks, I had a hearty laugh

Lagaan is a good movie -- but it doesnt deserve statements like "going into history" etc. The fact is that bollywood hasnt been having movies other than love stories for a long while now, and this movie, just being different in this aspect, gained greater attention. A movie like "Kutty" in tamil is a much better one than Lagaan. -Ashok

""Lagaan straddles not only two cultures but also two periods. That's why it has a contemporary and worldwide appeal"" Lagaan is different from a typical hindi film. That is all. Your reasons is plain bullshit.
